At the start of the year, Christopher Ellis featured in our Ones to Watch article. After a successful 2011 touring with the Marleys and recording with other artists including Gappy Ranks and Shola Ama, 2012 is seeing him go from strength to strength.
He spent the early part of 2012 in Jamaica and Miami recording new material with Stephen and Damian, sons of the legend Bob Marley. As son of the Godfather of Reggae and King of Rocksteady, Alton Ellis, Christopher is no stranger to music dynasties. While he was out in Jamaica, he began filming a documentary about his life in music which includes footage from his recent show in Paris, France. You can watch it here
We are loving his new single Yard Style, it’s a definite summer tune which is likely to breakthrough into the mainstream charts. We think a dance mix of it would be immense in Ibiza!
And that’s not the only song that Christopher has available for download at the moment. His remix of Puppy Love with Shola Ama happened when he penned a response to Shola in the original song. Once he had the lyrics, he just had to work with Curtis Lynch to make it happen.
His hard work ethic, faultless voice and endless creativity have led to 3 nominations in this year’s Brit Reggae Awards for Best British Male Newcomer, Best British Video and Best British Single. Voting is still open so there’s time to add your vote.
Later this year he will be releasing a long awaited EP to satisfy fans’ hunger to be able to listen to his material on their iPods rather than via YouTube. Check out his YouTube Channel to listen to his hits so far such as English and a Column10 favourite, Why Can’t We. But don’t say we didn’t warn you that it will leave you wanting more!
The EP is not the only thing that fans are excited about this Summer, Christopher is going to be playing at some huge events in the UK, culminating with a solo show at the Jazz Cafe, Camden on 1st September. This show is particularly significant for Christopher as it was the last place he played with his father Alton whose birthday is 1st September. A fitting tribute to the man who inspired him to make music.
